Buckingham Palace

This attraction sits atop the list for almost every London-bound traveler. It's probably the most famous site in all of London. Buckingham is the official residence of the Queen and the iconic royal guards who have appeared on so many postcards and movie screens. It's a sight to see at any time of year, but it's only open for tours during the summertime.

Leicester Square

This small plaza is the heart of London's film district. It's the site of most British film premiers and is surrounded by top-notch theatres. It's also one of London's hotter nightlife spots - the many bars, pubs and clubs draw crowds on a nightly basis.

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square commemorates one of Britain's most important military victories in recent history - Lord Horatio Nelson's 1805 defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte's powerful Navy. It features a monument to the vaunted admiral, and it hosts numerous concerts and holiday festivities throughout the year.

The National Gallery

Located at the north end of Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is a museum that houses the nation's vast collection of art. It's a good choice if you're looking to have a frugal day; aside from the various temporary exhibits, most of the artwork can be viewed free of charge. Museum staff also provide visitors with free tours and talks.
